Sign of the times

Sign of the times

Recognition. Some live for it, others shy from it, but inside it always feels good to be recognized for a job well done or going a step beyond the expected. This rings true at school, work, in a volunteer capacity, and even in relationships. Now landscaping practices are fair game for recognition and Audubon Pennsylvania is responsible for the praise. It’s called the Bird Habitat Recognition Program and it’s all about making properties friendlier for wildlife, especially birds. Qualifying is easy so longs as you have a portion of the attributes birds seek: sources of food; sources of water; nesting sites; ample cover (the more native plants the better); and, ideally, a naturalized area. And the best part – it’s free.

When I learned of the program, I was sold. Not only did my property meet the minimal requirements, but I’ve been planting native species as time and budget permit and strive to be a messenger of their merits. The Audubon program was a vehicle to validate and celebrate my landscaping practices and raise a flag, actually a sign, declaring my noble quest to be a homeowner who will work for – not against – wildlife.

Audubon asks for a $25 donation for one of their succinct and stately yard signs. Although it isn’t in the most conspicuous spot, people have asked me about my sign and what it means. The result is a teachable moment, helping others recognize the importance of better backyard stewardship. Maybe the sign is a sign of things to come? All are encouraged to sign-up for the program and help make the determination. Learn more at http://pa.audubon.org/habitat.

Journals

Often times, it takes just one person to inspire many to move to action. The iConservePA journals provide food for thought on how we can all be better stewards of our natural resources. Each journal, or blog, is a glimpse into one person’s life -- their perspective on conservation. We hope the journals will fill you with ideas and inspire you to take steps to protect and enjoy Pennsylvania’s natural resources.
