September 2008

I don't just search iConservePA for ideas,
I help others by sharing my own

If good ideas are contagious then let iConservePA be the host. Now you can write your own journal on the iConservePA website and update it as frequently as you’re inspired. Tell the world about your greenest insights and experiences, tips and tales. Add a photo, if you’d like. Be a spark for change while you inflame your creative passions. Maybe your words will light the fuse of stewardship and volunteerism in the lives of others. Visit the pages of the first journalists and then click your way to becoming an author in your own right.

Cleanup our shorelines

The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind. Last year, 378,000 volunteers from 76 countries and 45 states cleared six million pounds of trash from river banks and beaches. On the third Saturday in September each year, the Cleanup provides a tangible way for individuals to make a difference for one of the largest problems we face, trash in the ocean and our local waterways. Invaluable data is compiled about the trash that is collected. Get the details from the Conservancy’s web site, recruit a few volunteers who don’t mind getting their feet wet, and help our coasts shine. You don’t have to be Oscar the Grouch to handle litter on a more frequent basis, check out PA Cleanways for more ways to stash the trash of others.

Up for a challenge?

From September 12-30, raise funds to protect and enhance state parks and forests by participating in the Great Pennsylvania Outdoor Challenge, coordinated by the PA Parks and Forests Foundation. A challenge can be done by an individual, team, or family. You pick the location and activity most convenient for you. Bike rides, hikes, cleanups, trail repair, nature programs, canoe or kayak trips...anything goes. To participate, register your challenge online at www.firstgiving.com/ppff. Registered challengers receive a t-shirt and are eligible for prize drawings. Sign-up and let your muscles do their part for conservation! It’s also a poignant way to celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 28.

Each cause is attached to a statewide non-profit conservation organization. If their candidate wins, they receive $10,000 to help protect our natural resources. Cast your vote in October at the iConservePA web site.
