An Earth Day challenge to our schools
Through January 29, middle schools and junior high schools across Pennsylvania can register to participate in the Earth Day 40 Schools Challenge – one of three challenges offered by DCNR, cooperating state agencies, and other partners in recognition of the 40th anniversary of the first Earth Day. Grades 5-9 are eligible for the competition focusing on projects that bring lasting positive environmental change to the schools and inspiration to the surrounding communities. A Grand Prize package worth more than $1,500 is up for grabs. Spread the word and help our youth demonstrate their green resourcefulness.
Let your cards keep on greeting
St. Jude's Ranch for Children is accepting greeting cards for recycling through February 28. By removing the front and attaching a new back, beautiful new cards are made by the children and volunteers of St. Jude’s and sold via their online store. Customers receive "green" holiday cards for use and the children receive payment for their work and learn the benefits and importance of "going green". Send your cards to: St. Jude's Ranch for Children, Recycled Card Program, 100 St. Jude's Street, Boulder City, NV 89005.

In December, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that the county planning commission was one of four recipients of the 2009 National Award for Smart Growth for establishing a countywide comprehensive growth management plan which protects valuable farmland and historic landscapes by directing development to established towns and cities.
